Thoughts on my breast augmentation surgery

Under or Over the Muscle

There are two options when having breast augmentation surgery, either under or over the muscle. Prior to my first visit with Dr. Galante I was set on having my surgery over the muscle. I had heard that women who lift weights should consider going over the muscle because this would allow for more flexibility of the implants. Going over the muscle seemed to make perfect sense. I thought great, my implants will be on top, therefore I can continue to develop the muscle underneath and that would be fantastic.

Well, after meeting with Dr. Galante my bubble was burst. He explained that many women do go over the muscle, but there are risks involved in doing so. Choosing to have Dr. Galante for my procedure meant that I would have to consider a few things I was not aware of. First, he recommended that I no longer train my chest muscles the way I once did. Trying to stay as feminine in this area as possible I usually trained a bit lighter here anyway, but nevertheless I trained hard.

The reason behind Dr. Galante's philosophy is that going over the muscle with saline implants may cause visible wrinkles through the skin. He explained that when wearing a low v-neck shirt or bathing suit the natural wrinkles in the implant may be seen. Putting the implant above the muscle may expose these wrinkles, causing them to look very unnatural. Women who are naturally lean or athletes who maintain low body fat percentages run a higher risk of visible wrinkles in their implants when they choose to go over the muscle.

Another reason Dr. Galante recommended going under the muscle was for longevity and protection. Putting the implant underneath the muscle provides a home for the implants. There is much less flexibility under the muscle. The implants will remain pretty much where they are placed unless something severe causes them not to be.

I know someone who decided to go over the muscle for her BA. She is not positive how or what caused this to happen, but her breasts ended up shifting to the sides. Needless to say she had to have them redone and go through the procedure and healing process all over again. Dr. Galante wants his work to last as long as possible and feels the best way to follow through is by going underneath the muscle. Even though there will be a longer recovery period I am confident that this is the best option for me. Not working my chest as hard as I have become accustomed to will be challenging at first, but it will free up some of my time spent at the gym. I sure as heck know I do not want to go through this again anytime soon.

Hey Tracey!

My surgery is scheduled for 6/30 my last workout will be 6/29. Dr. Galante never mentioned anything before surgery so I plan to take full advantage! Afterward, no heavy lifting for about six weeks. Not working out for this amount of time makes me nervous, but I think it is a great opportunity to make some changes. My body is screamin for a break - I guess there is no better time! Best of Luck! =)

My friend had her implants shift to the side also. When she went for a consult with a different surgeon, it happened that the inside incision under the arm had not been closed enough (it's still has a 1.5 inch opening) and is allowing the implant to move around. For instance, when she lays flat with her arms by her side, her implants slide down next to her biceps. It can be fixed, but she needs to go in for another surgery. She's just living with it for now.

That is such a scary thing to have happen. As if it was not bad enough to go through the procedure the first time. Geezie Petes... Best wishes to your friend. =)
